from Stevenston was the most decorated British athlete at this year’s Deaflympics in Turkey after taking home two Gold and two Bronze medals.

As the Herald reported last week, Danii won Gold in the Women’s 50m Freestyle and Bronze in both the 50m Backstroke and the 100m Mixed Freestyle Relay. Since then, the 21-year-old achieved another Gold in the100m Freestyle, making her the most decorated athlete from Team GB.

Danii told the Herald: “It feels amazing to be bringing home four medals for my country. I had gone with the hopes of maybe bringing one home so I’m thrilled to bits.

“I’ve worked so hard and sacrificed so much, especially in the run up to the Deaflympics when I couldn’t even properly celebrate my 21st! My diet has been so strict and I can’t wait to just relax a little.

“Seeing everyone I met four years ago and meeting new deaf people from around the world is always the best part of these things and I have come away with so many new friends.”

The Deaflympics are an International Olympic Committee-sanctioned event for deaf athletes competing at elite level.

Following her return home on Monday, Danii said: “I couldn’t wait to see my dogs. Or tuck into a Chinese and a box of chocolates. I’m having a break over summer now – thankfully – but I’ll start training again in September.

“It’s the Europeans next year so I think I have my sights on that.”

Danii said she wanted to thank everyone for their support. She added: “The messages and comments from everyone back home whilst I was competing really kept me motivated and driven.”
