LOCAL people are being asked to give their thoughts as to where a statue in honour of Saltcoats’ legend, Bobby Lennox, will be housed.

The campaign to build a statue in honour of the former Celtic and Scotland footballer has continued to gather momentum and the public are being asked where they would like the statue to be erected.

The poll, which will be used to gauge opinion of Three Towns residents, will take place on the social media channels of the Statue Campaign with two sites in Saltcoats as the choices.

Speaking to the Herald, the committee said: “We want to have the whole community involved and would like to know what site you prefer. (This isn’t a vote just an opinion poll we will show the council.)

“You have two choices in relation to possible sites for the statue:

1. Countess Street

“Countess Street is one of the main footfall areas in Saltcoats and is adjacent to the main road into the town from Stevenston. It is also in close situ to Saltcoats train station and the main bus depot. It is an area that is active most days and nights due to retail trade. In addition to lots of people in the area it has 24hr CCTV in operation.

“There is also a strong emotional attachment to the street for Bobby, having ran his bar there for a number of years as well as being born in Quay Street.”

OR

2. The Shore front

“Other than Bobby himself, the shore is what Saltcoats is famous for, it presents a picturesque landscape for photography and the potential to grab some fantastic photographs with the Isle of Arran in as a backdrop. People are down the shore every day and will be especially busy during the summer.

“We would seek to have the wall area that is in place already restored to compliment the statue. We would also look at surveillance in that area.

“The shore also holds a sentimental value for Bobby having stayed on the shore front of many years.”
