A POPULAR Saltcoats pub has undergone a facelift with it’s ‘Trainspotting’ toilets being consigned to history.

And Miriam Wyllie from the Bar One said that the significant investment is just the beginning for the boozer.

The gents toilets, described by her as ‘the original Trainspotting toilets’ , are no more and now there is a disable and ladies toilets in the main bar.

Miriam said: “If we were going to do it, we were going to do it right, this wasn’t a £5,000 job, it was a £25,000 job. We know we needed a reasonable gents toilet and we have for years and years and we are over the moon. I think we now have the brawest toilets in the town. We know they have never been great but now we have taken the lead forward.”

And this is just the start as they have had planning permission granted for new frontage and improvements to the bar as well, with works to begin in the new year.

Miriam added: “We have the green light for a refurbishment with the bar and doors at the front. With the works going on in Saltcoats and the Town Hall looking great we think the town is coming good and with Costa coming to town, that is brilliant too. They do their homework and know what they are doing and we have to re-invest.

“There is still a certain stigma with Saltcoats but why should it be like that? We have a lot to offer and we have to move with the times.”

The new toilets have been getting a lot of good reaction from punters and fellow publicans in the town and Miriam believes it is well worth it.

She said: “I am a believer of giving back and we need to offer the facilities to do so. The finished job is even better than we thought.

“I have been at the Bar One for 14 years and the industry is always changing, it is a hard trade but we need to re-invest to give people the best possible opportunities.

“The only reason we can do this is because of our loyal customers.”

Miriam is pictured in the new toilets with Robert Kean and a hardy band of regulars were on hand to help cut the ribbon last Thursday.
