A CONSTANT humming noise has been plaguing residents and their pets in the Hayocks area of Stevenston for around a month.

Neighbours Lianne Maloney and Amanda Taylor were so irritated by the persistent buzzing that they’ve both been to their doctors to check it’s not their ears.

Lianne has contacted SP Energy, BT (Openreach), and the council but nobody has been able to determine the cause of the noise.

She said: “It’s like a constant humming noise. Sometimes it can be very loud. The woman across the road can hear it as well. We’ve thought of everything but we just don’t know what it is at all. At night you have to stick in earplugs.”

Amanda added: “At night it can get quite loud and annoying. You have to turn up the telly. You start rubbing your ears; it just grates on your nerves. My dogs go to the back door and bark when it’s loud.”

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “We were contacted by a resident at St John’s Place, Stevenston, about an unidentified humming noise in the area, which has apparently been heard both at night and in the morning. In order to investigate this, we have so far carried out two visits but were unable to identify any unusual sounds. Nevertheless, we intend to carry out a further visit to try to identify the source of the noise.”

A spokesperson for SP Energy Networks added: “We don’t believe that electricity equipment in the area was responsible for the noise being reported – but we are always happy to speak to residents and help to investigate any concerns.”

An Openreach spokesman said: “Following reports of a buzzing noise in St John’s Place in Stevenston, Openreach engineers have fully investigated the matter. Given the very low levels of voltage running through our cables we’ve found no noise to be coming from our equipment.”
