POLICE have confirmed that a 13-year-old boy, described by the council as "a promising, young pupil", has died after being found unconscious at a house in Ardrossan.

Ambulance and police were called at around 7pm last night (Sunday, September 17) to a house in Barrie Terrace after a 13-year-old boy was found unconscious within.

The boy, a pupil at St Matthew's Academy in Saltcoats, was taken by ambulance to Crosshouse Hospital where he died a short time later.

Police have confirmed that they are not treating the teen's death as suspicious at this time.

A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

The boy's death is the second tragedy to hit St Matthew's in a week. Last Monday (September 11), a 14-year-old pupil was found dead in an Irvine park.

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “We are all devastated by the death of a promising, young pupil and our thoughts are with the family at this time.

“We will take every step possible to ensure that the needs of our young people and their families are being met. As well as a range of support in schools through our counsellors, educational psychologists, chaplains and school staff, we would urge any of our pupils who have questions or concerns to contact the school and speak to a member of the pastoral support team.”
