MEMBERS of the local Royal British Legion Scotland branch gathered at Saltcoats War Memorial to celebrate the trophy they shared with Nairn for Best Kept War Memorial.

The award, which honours War Memorials across the country is supported by Legion Scotland and Saltcoats has a rich tradition in keeping the memorial in top shape.

Legion President Alistair Kennedy said: “We in the branch thank Councillor Jim Montgomerie for all of his help, and a huge thank you to Provost Ian Clarkson and all in North Ayrshire, including all of the gardeners for all of their hard work.”

Cllr Montgomeries, who is also a Legion member, said: “I have been working hard on the Saltcoats Memorial for a couple of years now. It is an important part of Saltcoats’ history with lots of families affected by what went on all those years ago.

“It is extremely important that we don’t forget what was done on our behalf to ensure our freedom and those who lost their lives should never be forgotten. Please remember and try to turn up for this years remembrance parade.”
