POLICE closed the busy A78 between Stevenston and Irvine this morning after a broken down car and an accident.

Two cars were said to be involved with one further car said to be in a ditch.

Police received numerous reports of incidents on the road this morning.

And the officers requested gritters to the road because it was so bad with ice.

The A78 is owned and operated by Transerv Scotland.

Police confirmed that the road has since re-opened after recovery of the car, which had broken down on the outside lane.

There are still massive delays on the road.
