The rain failed to dampen the atmosphere at this year’s Ardrossan Castle Carnival as families turned out for lots of medieval fun.

Revellers were treated to a whole banquet of spectacular entertainments at the event on Castle Hill on Saturday, June 16.

There was music, puppets, horse jousting, musket firing, Fester the Jester, re-enactments, castle tours, crafts, archery, medieval warriors, storytelling and much, much more.

The children were also delighted with some swashbuckling adventures as they learned the art of (fake) sword fighting to protect fair maidens.

George McGrattan, from Ardrossan Castle Heritage Society, said: “It went well. The entertainment provided was of a very high quality and the performers all did well.

“Unfortunately, it was raining in the morning and didn’t stop until noon and this had an impact on the crowd.

“But the people who went there thoroughly enjoyed it and had a good time.

“It really was excellent.

"If only the weather was better.”

Last weekend’s carnival also saw a special visit from YouTube star and Outlander actor Andrew McAlindon, also known as ‘Andy the Highlander’.

Dressed in full Jacobite regalia and in character, Andy was happy to pose for photos with fans.

He said: “I had the pleasure of attending the Ardrossan Carnival last weekend with my son Daniel.

“We had a fantastic time meeting everyone who came to the very well organised event.

“Being a former Ayrshire man myself, living in Fairlie and Largs for many years, it was lovely to come back home.”
