SALTCOATS CHURCH TO CLOSE

IN A move which will sadden many in the community, St Brendan"s Church in Saltcoats is to close and its parish amalgamated with nearby St Mary"s.

Bishop John Cunningham announced the news in an emotional message read out to the congregation at the weekend, blaming the decision on the extremely high cost of repairing St Brendan"s buildings, which are in a much worse state than was first thought.

A general survey commissioned from Davis Langdon Associates - with the hope that they would be able to direct the focus of the work involved to bring the buildings into the required current standards - had come as a great shock, said the Bishop.
