ARTHUR FRANK SHAPLEY: 1908-2012
Ardrossan architect passes away aged 103
PROMINENT Ardrossan architect Arthur Frank Shapley passed away aged 103 in June.
He was born on December 7, 1908, in Chippenham Wilts and his family moved to North Ayrshire when his father - a Master Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer - was in search of work. His father was in great demand with the fitting out of the many ships being build on the Clyde at that time.
A bright and clever youngster Arthur achieved the grades he needed to start his career in Architecture. After completing a Building Science course at Ardrossan Academy he attended Glasgow School of Architecture and later admitted to ARIA of Scotland, the Faculty of Architects & Surveyors and then LRIBA.
