NORTH Ayrshire Council is encouraging all water and boating enthusiasts to take part in the Commonwealth Flotilla as part of this year’s Glasgow 2014 celebrations.

The event, which will start on Friday, July 25, will provide participants with an unforgettable way to journey into the centre of Glasgow – and make Clyde history on its travels.

This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity hosted by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Scotland has space for 250 boats and on formation will present the largest flotilla in history to have sailed the Clyde.

The event will start with a lively reception at James Watt Dock in Greenock on Friday, July 25.

Boats will embark on the journey up the Clyde on the morning of Saturday, July 26, just as the tide begins to flood.

Upon arrival the boats will be warmly welcomed by spectators and photographers keen to capture the moment the flotilla makes Clyde history.

Boats will berth at Pacific Quay, right in the heart of Glasgow and central to all of the action with many of the sporting venues located a short walk from the marina.

Participants will stay overnight to make the most of the myriad of live events and activities happening across the city, such as ‘BBC at the Quay’ – an open air broadcast and entertainment centre that will run throughout the day and into the evening situated on the banks of the berthing site.

Places are limited, and those interested in taking part are recommended to register early.

Deputy Leader of the Council and Portfolio Holder for Community and Culture, Councillor Alan Hill, said: “I think this is fantastic opportunity for sailing clubs and sailors within North Ayrshire to be part of the celebrations and I would encourage them all to sign up and take part in this historic flotilla event.” To take part register your boat by downloading the entry form from the RYA Scotland website at www.ryascotland.org.uk or email flotilla@ryascotland.org.uk.
