SALTCOATS bowler Irene Edgar has won silver in her encounter with South Africa in the para-sport mixed pairs final at Kelvingrove.

Irene said the silver medal is 'the highlight of my career'.

In a tense match against eventual gold medallists South Africa, the Scottish para-sport pair lost narrowly by 14-10.

Irene and her partner Robert Conway came mightily close to picking up the first gold medal handed out at the Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Centre.

But South Africa pipped them leaving the pair, assisted by Ron McArthur and David Thomas from Ardrossan, with silver medals.

After the match Irene said: “I feel fantastic. I’m over the moon.

"The whole experience has been unreal. It’s just totally amazing.

"This is the highlight of my career."

Robert added: "I'm very thrilled but a little bit disappointed in the way we played.

"We didn’t really give South Africa a game and I think we could have played a lot better.

"Not taking anything away from South Africa who played well and deserved to win.

"It was one of those days when you have an off day and it’s hard to put your finger on it.

"South Africa played better than us and I didn’t perform. We were very confident last night, but we just didn’t perform, it’s as simple as that.

"Brilliant to have so many medals and it’s only day three."
