ARDROSSAN’S iconic castle became tied up in the referendum debate this week after supporters of independence climbed up scaffolding to hoist a Yes flag, a Saltire and a Lion Rampant above the town.

But the move has been described as dangerous with some warning the large flag could act as a sail and put the scaffolding in danger of collapse.

Pat Breen of the Ardrossan Castle Heritage Society said: “The scaffolding is there for an important purpose.

"It is there to keep the castle safe and maintenance work is due to start on September 29.” “This could act like a sail, if the wind catches it, it could come down.

"Now someone has to go up and take it down.” It is up to North Ayrshire Council to remove the flags.

A council spokesperson said: “The council is aware of the incident and is currently in the process of removing the referendum campaign flag from the site.

“Security will also be increased to limit the opportunity for this to be repeated.

“The council is monitoring the site and others where similar events have taken place and will ensure appropriate action is taken.”
