YOUNG people in Stevenston have been offered an alternative place to chill out with their mates on a Friday night thanks to a local community group.

Stevenston Community Association have joined with North Ayrshire Council Youth Services to provide a safe place for young people to meet with their friends rather than hanging around the streets on a Friday night.  Cafe Alternative was launched last Friday and will be open on Friday nights in the Ardeer Neighbourhood Centre from 6.30pm to 9.30pm.

Visitors have access to music, iPads, console games, pool and air hockey equipment or they can just sit around with friends for a drink or snack.

PC Jason Peter of Ayrshire Division said: “This is a great example of the community listening to local young people and providing facilities for them to use - with over 20 young people attended on the first night.

“The presence of large groups of people on the street can cause concern in communities but often young people are just looking to catch up with friends, socialise and aren’t committing any crime.

“Officers visited Cafe Alternative on Friday night to engage with those in attendance and support the organisers.

“In recent weeks we have increased the number of joint patrols conducted with local youth workers and these patrols will continue.

“During the patrols we encourage young people to stay safe and to make positive lifestyle choices  – Cafe Alternative is the perfect place to safely spend some time with your mates on a Friday night.” For further information please contact the Caley Centre, Stevenston on 01294 602027.
