Celtic legend John Hartson helped madcap Stevenston grappler Grado get to grips with his swing this week as they prepared for a charity golf day.

The Insane Fight Club wrestler is just one of the star attractions at the John Hartson Foundation’s shootout on the fairways at the prestigious Mar Hall course, Bishopton, on Tuesday, April 21.

Grado will be joined by another local – Arran-born former First Minister Lord Jack McConnell – as well as ex-Rangers goalie Andy Goram, Celtic heroes Frank McAvennie and Murdo MacLeod, and Waterloo Road star Shane O’Meara at the event.

Grado – real name Graeme Stevely – admitted he was nervous about teeing off with the sports stars.

He said: “I’m a terrible golfer and definitely need some lessons from John and the guys.

"I’ve played a few times but spend half my time caddying.

“The Foundation’s Grab Life By the Balls motto – which encourages guys to check for signs of testicular cancer – is one I can relate to.

"I’m up for trying everything. I spend lots of time jumping about with a leotard and a bum bag on, so if anyone Grabs Life by the Balls, it’s me.

“When I’m wrestling I always seem to end up getting injured down there so I’m always checking myself – I do it in the bath.

"Like most people, I’ve had experience of family members who have been affected by cancer so I’m delighted to help a great cause.” A donation from the proceeds of the day will go to Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research in memory of Jak Trueman, the West Lothian teenager who raised more than £40,000 for the charity just days before he sadly lost his battle with cancer.

The inspirational 15-year-old received thousands of messages on social media and sports stars and celebrities rallied round to show their support. Jak was a massive Rangers fan and several of the ex-players who will attend the golf day supported him when he was ill.  John said: “We have great support from some big names and I’m really looking forward to welcoming everyone and catching up with some old friends.

"I’m sure it will be a great experience for everyone involved but there’s a serious side to it all too – we’re raising awareness of testicular cancer and raising money in memory of Jak, a very brave boy whose story has inspired many people.” For more information about the golf day johnhartsonfoundation.co.uk.
