A STEVENSTON shop will be closing its doors this month to be replaced by a store specialising in alcohol.  The town’s Scotmid store has been ‘underperforming’ and will be replaced by Bargain Booze, who have over 600 stores nationwide.  Scotmid revealed this week that no jobs would be lost but the store will be converting towards the end of the month.  A spokesperson said: “Scotmid’s Stevenston store has been underperforming over a period of time and it has been earmarked to be replaced by a Bargain B’s store. This will focus on the provision of beer, wine and spirits but will remain selling groceries.  “The store will convert at the end of this month.  “There will be no job losses within the store and all staff will remain as Scotmid employees.”  This conversion is a joint initiative between the two stores and according to a Scotmid, is being implemented in other areas too.  Local Labour MP Katy Clark said: “I am disappointed that the Scotmid store will be changing to a Bargain Booze franchise.

"We need stores such as Scotmid and its closure in Stevenston will be a loss for both the staff and local community.” Bargain Booze confirmed to the Herald that they would be opening up in Glebe Street on March 27.
