AN ARDROSSAN nurse who spent four months in Sierra Leone working in a Red Cross Ebola treatment centre set off on the West Highland Way on Monday to raise funds for the charity.

Margie Lee, 52, is a bank nurse with Ayrshire and Arran NHS, but she was so moved by the plight of people hit by the deadly virus she gave up her time to help out at a Red Cross centre in Kenema earlier this year.

“This first hand experience gave me an insight into the very many challenges facing the Red Cross as they endeavour to help those most in need, helping ordinary people, just like you and me,” Margie said.

“They were people in crisis and the Red Cross stepped in to help.” “From the start of my work in Kenema through to completion, I felt safe and supported and feel proud to say I worked for them and the value the British Red Cross stands for.” Margie is doing the 96-mile walk from Milngavie to Fort William with nursing colleagues and friends Yvonne Lo, 39, from Southampton and Martin Lewis, 42, from County Derry, who also worked in Sierra Leone as Ebola nurses.
