AN ARDROSSAN farm has just launched its 2015 season of Ayrshire New Potatoes – to be sold exclusively by Tesco’s Scottish stores.
The Wilson family have been growing tatties at the 350 acre Low Boydston Farm for four generations.
Thomas Wilson signed the original deeds to the farm on December 9, 1887 – Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee.
Current grower Irene Wilson said: “Ayrshire New Potatoes have an amazing taste and unique texture. “It’s a shame the rest of the UK has to miss such a distinctive product.” Of the 350 acres, 100 acres are sand-loam on the coast, and a further 200 acres are loam soil, lying 100 feet above sea-level.
The farm works on a rotation of potatoes and beef cattle, to ensure fertile soils and delicious products.
The farm also benefits from the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, making it an ideal location to grow Ayrshire New Potatoes.
In the words of Irene, “It’s really not summer until you’ve had an Ayrshire tattie!” For more details, see this week's Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald.
