CONFUSION is surrounding where the new development near to Hawkhill Roundabout actually is.

Kilwinning and Stevenston both lay claim to the site but a definitive answer is far more complicated than it seems.

If you were to drive past the site, past the fire station and towards Pennyburn, you will clearly see the sign for Kilwinning after the area – but if you look at the boundary for the North Ayrshire Council wards, it seems that it is in Kilwinning Ward.

And the confusion continued when the Kilwinning area committee named the site.

At the meeting at the start of June, it was agreed that Ashenyard Park was to be the name of the site after this was put forward by Councillor Steele and seconded by Cllr Ferguson.

Cllr Donald Reid put forward a motion to call it Dynamite Drive but it received no support.

The new site will be home to a Marston’s pub, KFC and Costa Coffee Drive-Thru.

To make matters worse, job adverts for the new Marston’s, which is due to open in March 2016, say that it is located in Pennyburn, Stevenston but carries the KA20 postcode, which is used by Stevenston residents.

When the site went through planning applications it has always been noted to be in Stevenston.

North Ayrshire Council said: “We can confirm that the Kilwinning Area Committee of June 11, 2015 named the Hawkhill development.

"The report was taken to the Kilwinning Area Committee as the development lies in Ward 3 (Kilwinning).

"Members of Ward 3 (Kilwinning) and Ward 4 (Saltcoats & Stevenston) were consulted on their views prior to the committee.

“Although the development lies within the boundary of the Kilwinning ward, it was allocated a post town and postcode of Stevenston, KA20, by the Royal Mail.

"The council does not have any responsibility for allocating post towns or postcodes.

"This responsibility lies solely with Royal Mail.”
