WITH building work getting underway, the debate rumbles on as to where the actual location of the new Hawkhill development actually is.  Kilwinning and Stevenston both lay claim to the site but a historical map, provided by the Stevenston Historical, Cultural and Geographical Agency, shows that the site clearly lies within the town of Stevenston.

The Ordinance Map, pictured, shows in green Stevenston and the yellow area is Kilwinning.

This is eye-opening as it shows the boundary to be split after the roundabout and in essence, Kilwinning Community Fire Station is actually in Stevenston too.  Robert McGuire, secretary of the Agency, said: “The middle of the main bus route between both towns, with the firestation in the Stevenston side and the Cancer Care Clinic plus the car wash in the Kilwinning side.

“A Mr Frew owned and lived in Hawkhill Farm at the main entrance route into Hawkhill Retail Park, which was demolished during this construction work.  “A small Hawkhill Cottage sits in the field opposite Castlehill Farm, now residential property, and correctly postcoded by Royal Mail as in Stevenston.”  One point which seems to be key to the argument, and counters many arguments of those who think the new site is in Kilwinning, is the sign for Stevenston which sits straight after the fire station and heads up towards the Hayocks and Ardeer Golf Club.  This argument may continue to rumble on because there are points from both sides staking claim to the new development but it is looking more and more like Stevenston is holding all the aces, despite the fact the development was named by Kilwinning Councillors.  Have your say on where you think it is by emailing editorial@ardrossanherald.co.uk.
