POLICE are continuing their investigations into a hate crime committed against a priest during Glasgow's Orange Walk.

As reported by the Evening Times previously, Canon Tom White was speaking to parishioners outside St Alphonsus Church on Saturday when he was spat on twice before being lunged at by a man with a baton. The Archdiocese of Glasgow said both Canon White and his parishioners had been “subjected to vile abuse”.

The incident happened at around 5.15pm.

Superintendent John McBride said: “A team of officers are working to establish the identity of the person responsible for what can only be described as a despicable hate crime and not something anyone in 21st century Scotland should tolerate. The person responsible for this disgusting assault should be ashamed of themselves.

“We continue to explore forensic opportunities and review CCTV footage from the vicinity of the attack, and across the city.

“We believe a man with a shaven head and aged between 20 and 30-years may have been involved.

“Officers have spoken to a large number of people who were part of the Orange Parade and we are grateful for the information provided so far. However, I am reiterating my earlier appeal for anyone with information which may assist the investigation to get in touch.

“This sort of bigoted behaviour is unacceptable and Police Scotland remains committed to bringing those responsible before the courts.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact CID officers at Shettleston Police Station via 101.

Alternatively, please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be given anonymously.
