West Kilbride Community Council has made a request to save the two under threat phone boxes in the village.

We reported last week that BT is consulting with councillors and community councillors regarding the future of poorly used phone boxes throughout North Ayrshire.

There were 352 phone calls made at the Main Street phone box, among the highest number of calls in the local district for phone boxes set to be axed. And although there were zero calls reported at the phone box at Highthorne Crescent, a request has been made by West Kilbride Community Council to repair the faulty phone box.

On the Being West Kilbride Facebook page, Kay Hall of West Kilbride explained that the request to maintain the phone box in the Main Street, which has been there for many years, was because of the patchy mobile phone reception in that particular area.

BT have given the local community the opportunity to adopt a traditional red ‘heritage’ phone box for the nominal fee of £1 and make them an asset the local people to enjoy. More details can be gained here.

BT’s consultation process lasts until December, but North Ayrshire Council were looking for responses from community councils by last Friday.
