ON Friday, October 21 members and invited guests enjoyed a wonderful evening celebrating the 30th anniversary of West Kilbride SWI.

Guest speaker for the evening was Lord McConnell of Glenscorrodale, former First Minister of Scotland.

The meeting was also attended by Anne Howat, Chairperson of the Ayrshire Federation.

President, Betty Orr, talked on how the group was founded thirty years ago by 12 friends, who got together to share knowledge, learn crafts and form new friendships.

The group has now grown into one of the largest in Ayrshire.

Lord McConnell (Jack) told the group how extreme weather in the Philippines had almost prevented him getting back.

However he was determined to attend and four flights later he arrived back in time for the meeting.

With the aid of a photographic slide show he entertained the group with some fascinating tales of his journey from farmer’s son on the Isle of Arran, to maths teacher, to First Minister for Scotland before entering the House of Lords in 2010.

Jack also spoke on his continuing work to tackle poverty in Africa and to develop the relationship between Scotland and Malawi.

A comprehensive vote of thanks was given by Pauline Turner.

Following his talk Jack was delighted to present Marion Beattie with an Honorary Membership.

Marion and Anne Howat then proceeded to cut the celebration cake which has been baked by Carol Bayliss, a former President of the group.

The evening concluded with a wonderful buffet provided by the members.
