NORTH Ayrshire and Arran MP Katy Clark has formally objected to EDF’s application to transport radioactive waste from other sites to Hunterston to be stored.

The MP said she had concerns about SEPA’s current policy of allowing low level radioactive waste to be transported by road to be stored at various locations, never mind granting permission for EDF to do so with Intermediate Level waste.

Notwithstanding the obvious safety risks involved in transporting the waste she has also raised concerns about the potential impact the move could have on the already much maligned A78.

Speaking after submitting her objection, Ms Clark said: “I simply cannot support a proposal which will not only see radioactive waste transported through our local roads but will potentially open Hunterston up as nuclear dumping site for nuclear waste for other sites.” “I strongly believe that the safest way to store radioactive waste is to do so closest to the source it has been generated.

“On that basis I hold concerns about SEPA’s current policy of allowing low level radioactive waste to be moved between sites never mind granting EDF permission to move more dangerous levels between sites to be stored.” Ms Clark added: “The lack of detail from EDF on their proposal is quite frightening.

“That’s why I am asking for a meeting with EDF to discuss with them why they submitted this application and discuss what impact it could potentially have on the local area.”
