WEST Kilbride violinist Nicola Benedetti has led thousands of primary school children across Scotland in an interactive music lesson.
On the webcast, broadcast live from BBC Scotland in Glasgow, Ms Benedetti was joined by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra with the event hosted by Blue Peter’s Barney Harwood.
Thousands of schoolchildren from across the country joined in online as part of a BBC Music project, Ten Pieces.
The project, launched in June 2014, is aimed at taking classical music into the classroom, and is described by the BBC as “the most ambitious music education project the BBC has ever initiated.” Targeted at primary school children, it centres around 10 pieces of classical music, which include Mozart, Handel and Britten.
The pieces come with online resources and special events such as this interactive lesson, where Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 and In the Hall of the Mountain King, by Grieg, was played.
Nicola, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and a number of young musicians tackled the first movement of Beethoven’s fifth symphony, whilst thousands watched online.
Nicola, who won Young Musician of the Year when she was just 16, also shared advice about her own musical career and introduced a special film about the project.
