FAST-rising darts ace Robert Thornton is gearing up for a third appearance in one of the sport's most prestigious events and will also be going for glory in another major tournament.

Thornton learned just over a week ago that he had secured a place in the Betway Premier League. The event runs for 16 weeks from February 4 at venues across the UK, Ireland and Holland and features the top 10 players in the world.

But before that he competes in the Unibet Masters at Milton Keynes on Saturday, January 30 and Sunday, January 31.

The Saltcoats ace who suffered a shock opening round loss out to Englishman Alan Norris in the PDC World Championships has returned to fitness after recovering from a heel injury which hindered his mobility.

He is relishing the challenges ahead and said: "I was disappointed to go out early in the World Championships but my injury affected my mobility. I now feel fine and look forward to the next few months."

Seeded seventh in the Masters, Thornton will take on 10th seed Davie Chisnall in the opening round on January 30 before heading to Leeds for the opening night of the league on February 4.

Thornton, who won the World Grand Prix in October, said: "The Masters is a big event and features the top 16 players in the world. I have beaten them all at some point and am looking to win it.

"It's great to be in the Premier League and a lot of prize money is on offer. I was fifth in it two years ago and the year before. It's a tough competition with the likes of world champion Gary Anderson and Michael van Gerwen competing. So my initial aim will be to ensure I make the final cut as two players are eliminated in week nine and then I will take it from there. It would be great to make the final four and have the opportunity to play in the finale at the O2 in London."
