JULIE Moon from the Windy Ha B is the new Clyde Coast Ladies Singles Champion.

She captured the title in the Elms just before the festive break where the eight qualifiers had gathered with their supporters to crown their new Singles Queen. Julie, a member of Scottish Dominoes who also plays on the Clyde Coast Circuit beat a former Champion Frances Reid from Jacks Corner in her opening match to set up a semi-final showdown with Susan Watson of Bobby’s Pink Ladies. Following a close game Moon then came face-to-face with Cathy Robertson who represents the Windy Ha A in the Final and what a Final it proved to be.

Moon won the down and held before moving two ahead and taking the initiative.

Robertson, not to be outdone countered with the next two chalks to level the match. Parity was restored as both girls refused to relinquish their next down and so at three each they shook hands before Moon downed in the chalk that would herald in the new Champion. The chalk progressed with both girls deep in concentration and the pendulum swung firmly in Moon’s direction when Robertson introduced the first six only to see it chopped after a long period of study by Moon. The reason for the studying became evident as the introduction of the second six by Robertson saw Moon, who had clearly remembered her coaching take her double six at the second time of asking. Both then chapped and Robertson with the blank one and blank two was outdone by Moon’s double blank. Both were gracious in victory and defeat as Elms Manager Jan McMillan conducted the presentation and administrator Billy Mitchell thanked all concerned.

Ten in a row too far

IT had reached nine in a row, a figure which won’t be lost on either side of the Old Firm when Billy Walker and his charges arrived at Ardrossan Masonic for the Annual festive challenge match between the two leagues - The Three Towns Trophy in memory of John Munn.

Walker had captured the very first title in 2007 as Vice Captain to Billy Mitchell before taking the Premiership reigns himself for what transpired into the foreseeable future. Year after year he retained the title with Vice Captains in the shape of Charlie Davidson, Graeme Stewart, Joe Munn, Gary Sinclair and the aforementioned Mitchell on four occasions. Secretary Mitchell with Treasurer Peter McBlain presented Anne Munn with a cheque for £500 towards the Munn family charity as the teams raised a glass in the traditional toast to the man himself. The usual suspects were in attendance however the Championship is a particularly cut-throat and strong Division this Season and their squad was bolstered with large contingents from the home team, the Victoria Bar and both Jack’s outfits. Mitchell together with Vice Joe Munn placed the Singles first and they took the lead 3-1. It was extended first to 7-1 then 11-1 and 14-2 before the Premiership awoke from their slumber to stage the expected fight back and fight they did, clawing the match back to 14-7 heading into the final third of the Singles.

Of the remaining 12 the Championship won eight to take a 22-11 half time lead. This Event is populated with experience on both sides and at half time both Mitchell and Walker would undoubtedly be reminding their troops that the match is far from over and that the Doubles is quite simply where it would be won or lost. It was the turn of Walker to produce his players first in the Doubles which allowed Mitchell to match up what he imagined were winning combinations.

The first set was split two apiece however the Championship turned the heat up winning the next two sets 3-1 to move further ahead 38-19 effectively ending the contest.

The match concluded with a score of 40-25 recorded in favour of the Championship. Following the handshakes and congratulations led by Walker he then very sportingly ventured forward and presented the Trophy to the Championship- winning team.
