SALTCOATS VICTORIA 5

KILSYTH RANGERS 7

STRUGGLING Saltcoats came close to causing a sensational upset after giving the First Division title chasers a scare in this 12-goal thriller at Campbell Park.

The pitch was heavy, but perfectly playable for this previously postponed match.

It came as something of a surprise when Mathew Santos blasted Saltcoats into an early lead with barely 10 minutes played.

However it was only another couple of minutes though before Paul McBride levelled things with a shot from just inside the box. Five minutes later a Tyrell conceded a penalty for the visitors with Quinn easily converted to put Vics back in front.

The goals were coming thick and fast now and almost immediately McCroary brought Kilsyth level again in a real roller coaster ride of a match.

A piece of totally comic defending on the visitors' part allowed Stephen Reid to put Saltcoats into the lead for a third time just on the half hour.

This time they managed to hold on to it for a little while before some good work between Prentice and McGhee allowed the latter to again bring Rangers back level.

Two minutes later Rangers were ahead for the first time when Diack won the ball in what could have been an offside position and shot home.

Almost on the interval, McGee denied Saltcoats a goalscoring opportunity and was red-carded. When the dust settled, Sean Quinn converted the resultant penalty kick to make it 4-4 at the break.

The visitors looked more organised after the break and McBride notched his second goal with a header.

When Diack got his second and Rangers' sixth it was really all over. McBride completed his hat-trick to emphasise Rangers' dominant second half superiority.

Saltcoats substitute Brett McKenzie added a very late fifth goal for the Seasiders but it was much too late to make any difference.

However Vics and their interim manager Tam McClelland will surely take great confidence from the way they competed against one of the leading lights in the Super First Division.
