West of Scotland Cup First Round

MARYHILL 1

ARDROSSAN WINTON ROVERS 1 (Maryhill win 6-5 on penalties)

WINTON made the trip to Glasgow's Lochburn Park looking to get back to winning ways against a struggling Maryhill team and included manager Bryan Slavin in defence.

This match was played on a pitch that had cut up badly even before kick-off and good football was at a premium as both sides struggled on the surface.

The hosts took the lead in the four minutes when Sean McCall cut in from the right, riding Slavin’s tackle before firing into the far side of the net .

The lead only lasted two minutes as Rovers went down the park and won a corner. A poor punch by ';Hill goalie Derrick Moore saw the ball headed down to Jamie McKenna by Slavin and the striker made no mistake from close range to make it 1-1.

Five minutes later there was a half chance for Thomas Donovan but a defender shepherded the ball back to Moore.

At this point Winton were the better side without really threatening or creating clearcut chances. However Maryhill then looked the more dangerous side.

In 25 minutes Anthony Marenghi hit a 25 yard free-kick wide for Maryhill then they had a chance from a corner which was headed off the line.

Maryhill could have regained the lead in 34 minutes when a ball in from the right ran right across the box to Ciaron Smith at the back post but he shot wide from a good position. Winton’s task was made more difficult a minute later when Alan Jamieson was sent off for after a scuffle for the ball leaving Rovers with 10 men for 55 minutes. Two minutes later Steven Tan had to clear a dangerous ball out of the goalmouth.

Winton had a half chance in 50 minutes and three minutes later Thomas Donovan had a shot which was partially blocked and the ball ran through to Moore.

Bryan Tucker then made a good save with his feet from Ryan Tiffney. Andrew Banks then headed narrowly over the bar from the resulting corner in 79 minutes. With 10 minutes remaining the Winton goalie made another good save with his feet, this time from substitute McLarty.

As full-time approached, Winton had a couple of half chances and McKenna could have won it with two minutes left when he got the ball on the left side of the box after some good play by Steven Tan and Larry McMahon but he shot over the bar from a good position.

Into the shootout and Bryan Tucker saved Hill’s first penalty from Tiffney. Lee Davidson, Alan Muir, David Orr and Steven Tan all converted their spot kicks and with three Maryhill players scoring their penalties to make it 4-3 it only needed McKenna to net to put Winton through. However Moore easily saved his poor spot kick and Joseph Beckley scored to take it to sudden death. Both Marc Davidson and Francis Owens converted their penalties to make it 6-5 to Maryhill.

Larry McMahon stepped up to keep Winton in it but his poor spot kick was saved by Moore and Maryhill went through.
