TWO West Kilbride bowlers have been crowned national champions for the first time.

Lawra Cox and Wendy Grant, who both play out of Ardrossan Indoor Bowling Club, won the Ladies 2 Bowl Pairs title at the Scottish National Championships at Blantyre Bowling Club on Sunday.

They defeated Karen McGee and her Rachel Sinclair from West of Scotland in the final on a tie-break after the game had been tied at one set all.

It was the second major success for the duo, who won the Ayrshire Two Bowl Pairs last year and have more than 60 years of experience between them.

Lawra said: "It's the first time have won a Scottish Indoor title in 30 years. My expectation was we would be runners-up if we were lucky. For me it was a shock and absolute delight. It was a tough game and we played well enough to win it. There was a real determination to come away with a trophy after going so far.

"This has to be one of the highlights of my career - it's a great achievement. We were runners-up outdoors for West Kilbride at the National Championships in 2015 at Northfield. A lot of credit goes to Wendy, who has been competing indoor for much longer than me, she was the skip and the one who had to throw all the big bowls."

Wendy added: "I am over the moon to win the title. I surprised myself with some of the bowls I played but once we made it to the final we were determined to win it. I started playing 32 years ago at Ardrossan Indoor Bowling Club. It was great to win the trophy but it didn't sink in until Monday."
