ARDEER THISTLE 1

ARDROSSAN WINTON ROVERS 4

WINTON toppled Thistle at Ardeer Stadium on Wednesday to chalk up their first league win since January.

After a quiet start, Thistle had the first attempt in five minutes when Ryan Morrow shot over the bar from the edge of the box. Winton, however took the lead two minutes later when Thomas Donovan beat the offside trap and took off down the right wing got into the box and squared the ball to Larry McMahon who made no mistake from five yards in seven minutes.

At the other end, Morrow played the ball across the face of the Winton goal where Andy McGregor cleared off the line and then Bryan Tucker saved the follow-up shot.

In 20 minutes Thistle won a free-kick 20 yards out but Derek Kennedy’s effort went well wide.

Morrow had the first chance after the restart when he cut in from the left and shot from just outside the box but the ball went well over the bar in 47 minutes. Two minutes later it was 2-0 when David Orr volleyed a Thomas Donovan cross into the roof of the net from close range. It was 3-0 in 55 minutes when after a corner on the left Rovers kept possession in the box and after a shout for a handball the ball came to Michael Lennox 15 yards out and he worked into a position to volley home. Winton’s hopes of a first clean sheet of the season were ended on the hour when Kennedy spectacularly volleyed home from the edge of the box following a free-kick.

Winton went 4-1 up in 71 minutes when another good Donovan cross reached Larry McMahon who played in Greg McVeigh who scored from close range for his first goal for the club.
