GLASGOW PERTSHIRE 2

ARDROSSAN WINTON ROVERS 7

SEVEN wonders Winton made a dream start to the league campaign with a demolition of the Possilpark hosts.

Winton made the journey to north Glasgow looking to make a good start to their league campaign following some good performances in the Sectional Cup although they were missing Kenny Parris, Andy McGregor and Mathew Ashe.

Winton were kicking into a blustery wind in the first half and Marc Davidson and Davie Wilson stopped a dangerous move down the left just before Rovers took the lead in seven minutes after they won a free-kick on the left wing 25 yards out. Lee Davidson crossed to the back post where Graham Longair sent a looping header into the far corner from 10 yards.

Winton had an escape in 10 minutes when Marc Davidson cleared a dangerous ball into the goalmouth which hit a Perthshire player before going wide.

'Shire were looking dangerous when they went up the pitch. In 16 minutes Davidson cleared a dangerous shot from Ryan Gemmell. Two minutes later Graeme Bodman hit the W bar with a shot.

Rovers then had some pressure. Adams made a good run in 24 minutes and cut into the box but his attempted cut back to Davie Cunningham was cut out and cleared. Another good move by Adams saw him find David "Harpo" Smith a couple of minutes later but his shot was blocked then cleared.

The visitors paid for not taking their chances in 31 minutes when Ryan Gemmell ran at the defence from midfield before playing in Bodman who scored from 15 yards.

Rovers should have regained the lead almost immediately when Sean Mears somehow shot wide from a couple of yards following a great David Smith cross.

'Shire then took the lead in 34 minutes when Mark Thomson headed home a corner to make it 2-1.

Despite missed chances Winton had in the first half few could have predicted the demolition job they would do on 'Shire in the second half.

Winton bagged the first of six second half goals in 50 minutes when the ball was headed on to Adams who ran into the box and fired past Calder from 15 yards. A minute later the striker ran on to a through ball, held off a defender and scored from the edge of the box for his fourth goal in four games to put Rovers 3-2 ahead.

Musa then had another shot from 25 yards go over the bar just before another off-the-ball incident, this time involving visiting player Craig Smith again saw the referee only show a yellow card. However 'Shire went down to 10 men a minute later when McIntyre, who had already been booked, was shown a second yellow and sent off for dissent.

Rovers doubled their lead when a Davidson free-kick from 25 yards went straight through to Calder who fumbled the ball and it ran into the net to make it 4-2 in 65 minutes.

In 70 minutes, Cunningham played a good ball to David Smith at the back post but the winger was unable to get a good header in and Calder made a comfortable save.

Winton’s man advantage was telling on a Shire side losing their discipline and it was 5-2 in 82 minutes when Smith chased a ball into the box and with Calder waiting for it to go out for a goal kick the winger nipped in, rounded the keeper and played the ball into the goalmouth where Jamie McKenna knocked it into the empty net. Two minutes later, the striker chased a pass and although Calder came out to the corner of his box, McKenna rounded him and played the ball into the goalmouth where Cunningham knocked it into the empty net for his first goal since returning to the club.

Two minutes from time, Michael Lennox won possession in midfield and played a ball through the defence. Jamie McKenna ran to the edge of the box and shot past Calder from 20 yards to make it 7-2. Before the restart David Kirkwood was shown a red card presumably for something he said to the referee and 'Shire ended the game with nine men.
