ARDROSSAN WINTON ROVERS 4

EAST KILBRIDE THISTLE 3

NEVER-say-die Winton blasted back from a two-goal deficit to edge out East Kilbride and rack up a second league win.

They bounced back in style following the home loss against Shotts Bon Accord a week earlier.

Winton were on the front foot from kick-off. In three minutes, Jamie McKenna ran on to a clearance by Scott Watson into the box but was unable to get a shot in and the ball went through to the visiting goalie.

Rovers could have taken the lead in 13 minutes. From Steven Tan’s corner-kick, Thistle cleared two shots off the line then only cleared the ball back out to Steven tan but he shot well over the bar.

Rovers were getting down the wings but East Kilbride’s defence were dealing with the crosses.

Following all of the sustained Winton pressure, Thistle opened the scoring totally against the run of play with practically their first attack when the ball was played to the edge of the box. The defence had several chances to clear but the ball broke to Alistair Morgan, who fired past Scott Watson from just inside the box.

It got worse a couple of minutes later when a defender tried to shepherd the ball out for a bye kick but a Thistle player got to it first, played the ball to the back post and although the first attempt went back across the goal, Paul Byrne was on hand to knock the ball home from a few yards.

In 32 minute David Adams cut inside and squared to McKenna in the goalmouth and he shot home from a few yards to make it 2-1.

Ten minutes later, Watson made a good save from Jonathan Diack.

However Thistle hit Winton with another sucker punch against the run of play a minute before half-time when Graham Longair headed a dangerous free-kick into the near post out for a corner. But from this corner Morgan headed home to put the visitors 3-1 up.

Winton had a lucky escape in 52 minutes when the ball went over the defence and Diack got in behind but his attempt to lob the Winton keeper went wide.

Rovers got right back into the game in 68 minutes when a ball was played into the box and it seemed that Greer had the simple task of collecting the ball as it ran through to him waiting on the bye line but he fumbled and the alert McKenna pounced, won the loose ball, ran towards the goal and rolled it into the empty net from a tight angle to make it 3-2.

In 70 minutes a 20-yard McKenna free-kick went narrowly wide.

Two minutes later, a good move by Winton down the right saw them do well to keep possession, but Sean Mears hit Steven Tan’s ball to him over the bar.

Winton levelled with four minutes left when Adams chased down a powerful headed clearance by David Wilson and carried the ball into the box, despite a defender trying to pull him back and volleyed past Greer from 15 yards.

With two minutes left Winton incredibly won the game when Lee Davidson won possession on the right and played a great pass to Steven Tan. who hit a low hard cross into the goalmouth where McKenna shot home from close range for his hat-trick and to cap an incredible comeback.
