ARDROSSAN WINTON ROVERS 0

GARTCAIRN 2

TWO late goals saw Winton lose out to the league leaders in a top-of-the-table clash.

Winton had new signing Andy Hunter, secured during the week from Girvan in at left-back, while David Adams returned up front in near-perfect weather conditions.

'Cairn had the first chance in two minutes when Jamie Leslie played a dangerous free-kick into the goalmouth but Chris Lamb got a good punch on it and Rory Campbell cleared the loose ball.

In 10 minutes Rory Campbell shot over the bar from just outside the box following some good play by David Smith, David Adams and Sean Mears.

On the half hour, a Smith free-kick was headed over the bar by Jamie McKenna.

In 40 minutes, there was another good chance for Rovers when Rory Campbell played a good ball to McKenna out on the left and a mistake by Gary Mullen allowed Adams to get into the box but his shot was parried by Smith and cleared by Ross before Mears could get to the loose ball.

Winton made a good start to the second half and two minutes in David Adams ran on to a ball down the right and although his initial ball into the box was cut out by Donnelly Jamie McKenna won the ball back and laid it back to Adams who cut the ball back to McKenna, who scuffed his shot and the ball ran back to Smith.

On the hour Andy Hunter swung over a good cross from the left to the back post where Andy McGregor headed the ball into the ground and it was a comfortable save for Smith.

It looked as if Rovers had finally got the goal their play deserved when Hunter played a great ball to the edge of the box which was chased by Ross and Jamie McKenna. The ball took a bounce and Ross headed it past Smith. The celebrations were shortlived as the referee somehow decided the striker was offside despite the fact he had not touched the ball.

To add insult to injury five minutes later, Cairn won a free-kick 25 yards out and although Shiels’s ball into the box was partially cleared it dropped to Donnelly, whose shot took a slight deflection off David Wilson’s leg and Lamb was unable to hold on to the ball. David Hepburn who had looked to have been in an offside position when Donnelly shot was first to the loose ball and although the keeper stopped his first shot Hepburn forced the ball home for a barely deserved lead in 79 minutes.

It got worse four minutes later when Cairn were awarded a penalty after a tackle by Michael Lennox on Donnelly just inside the box. Ross stepped up and gave Lamb no chance with his spot kick.
