Ardagh Group West of Scotland Cup First Round

RENFREW FC 1

BEITH JUNIORS 2

FOLLOWING defeat in the corresponding league fixture Renfrew made defensive changes whilst Beith stood by the the same starting 11 for this West cup clash.

The visitors started the better and threatened before taking the lead after only six minutes. Campbell flattened Keir Milliken in a challenge and from the resultant free-kick Connor McGlinchey’s inviting delivery into the box was headed home by Ryan Docherty.

The hosts had Healy and Borris yellow-carded in the first half and missed a great opportunity to level when McLennan headed over the bar when allowed a free header from a free-kick.

Beith had more efforts at goal but Paul Frize, in particular didn’t have his shooting boots on, missing the target with several shots.

The lead lasted only two minutes into the second half. The referee awarded Renfrew an indirect free-kick in the box when he decided Stephen Grindlay had picked up a pass-back and centre back Bob Campbell smashed his free-kick at the wall and the ball found the net via several deflections.

Beith were reduced to 10 men a few minutes later when Ryan Docherty received a straight red card for a late challenge. Spectators opinions varied over the punishment but the decision had been made.

Unsurprisingly Renfrew now fancied their chances and they would have gone in front had it not been for a great save by Stephen Grindlay to turn away a McKenna shot.

Beith doggedly stuck to their task and were rewarded with 12 minutes remaining when Connor McGlinchey scored from the penalty spot after Darren Christie was brought down by McLennan.

The referee made the numbers equal again when he despatched Renfrew’s Kieran Healy for an early bath when he received a second yellow card.

The last action saw 'Frew keeper McLeay making a fine save from a Darren Christie shot
