ARDROSSAN WINTON ROVERS 4

WISHAW 2

FOUR-goal Jamie McKenna helped Winton edge out Wishaw.

Rovers were looking to get back to winning ways after two defeats, at a cold Winton Park.

They were without David Smith who broke a hand in the Pollok game and he was replaced by Ross Ballantyne.

Winton were on the attack from kick-off and in four minutes, some good play saw the ball played to Jamie McKenna just inside the box and he turned and shot but visiting goalie Barry Fraser got a hand to the ball. From the resultant corner, Graham Longair headed wide. Winton were dominating early on and in eight minutes a dangerous cross from Ross Ballantyne wasn’t dealt with properly by the Wishaw defence and the ball dropped to Davie Wilson but he shot wide.

The hosts, however took a deserved lead in 10 minutes when McKenna, who had scored his 100th goal in junior football against Glasgow Perthshire, ran on to a through ball from Davie Wilson, got into the box and as Fraser came out to meet him he played the ball past him and into the empty net.

In 17 minutes Rovers were awarded a penalty when McKenna ran on to a good ball down the right from Ross Ballantyne, got to the line and the referee judged that his cross had hit a defender's hand and pointed to the spot. The striker stepped up and chipped his spot kick into the net.

Although Winton were creating all the chances and playing some good football, Wishaw did look dangerous going forward down the wings and in 24 minutes they had their first real chance when they won a free-kick 20 yards out but Bradley Rodden’s effort went wide.

Winton made it 3-0 after they won a corner following a good move down the right involving Ross Ballantyne and Davie Cunningham. Andy McGregor’s corner kick came straight back to him and he crossed the ball again to the back post where McKenna headed powerfully home for his hat-trick in 27 minutes. Rovers should probably have had a second penalty on the half hour when Davie Cunningham was clearly pushed as he went up for a Wilson cross but the referee played on.

Wishaw pulled a goal back in 32 minutes when they won a free-kick 25 yards out. Bradley Rodden's set-piece evaded home goalie Scott Watson, hit the inside of his left post and bounced over the line before Andrew Duffy made sure.

Five minutes later Wishaw nettted when Mark Canning connected with a cross and hit a spectacular first time volley into the net from 20 yards

Rovers relieved some of the pressure by getting a quick goal in 47 minutes when McKenna ran on to another good ball from Davie Cunningham and in an almost carbon copy of the first goal he slipped the ball past the advancing Fraser and into the empty net for his and Winton’s fourth goal.

Rovers came close when McKenna played the ball to Davie Cunningham and although his chip to the far side of the goal beat Fraser a defender headed off the line in 70 minutes.
