IT has been a busy couple of weeks for the younger members of the North Ayrshire Athletics Club, with the National Indoors Superteams as well as the National Age Group Championships all at The Emirates Arena in Glasgow.

The Superteams event on February 4 saw NAAC represented by 16 athletes in the Under-12 age group.

An amazing 424 athletes competed in what is always an excellent event.

Niamh Gaffney, Aoibha Ballard, Jessie Caig, Shannon Brown (A team), Poppy Kean, Rana Tatar, Adele Street and Clare McLaughlin (B team) represented the girls with Ross Booth, Jack Bruce, Dylan Gee, Ben Heron (A team), Sean Donnelly, Jack Meney, Harris McNicol and Blair Sutherland (B team) for the boys.

Throughout the day the youngsters battled well in a huge field from all over Scotland. The day was filled with Personal Bests and fantastic performances.

The Boys A team finished seventh with the B team 42nd out of 51 teams. The girls A team were 12th, with the B team 31st out of 55 teams.

Saturday, February 11 saw another national event with six athletes competing at the under 13 age group and two competing at under-20.

Another great day saw more PBs notched up.

Ben Heron ran well in 60, 200 and 800. making it to the semi-final in both 60m and 200m. Lucas Burns also qualified for the 200 semi-finals and ran an impressive 1500m. Leah Murray qualified for the shot putt final, throwing an excellent 7.5 metres to finish as the third ranked Scot, sixth in the field.

Leah also made it to the 60m semi-final and ran well in the 800m. Mary Jane McInally continues to impress at 800m with another PB of 2.40.35 and again ran well in the 200m.

Aoibha Ballard also continues to improve in the 60 metres hurdles with another PB along with a solid long jump. Niamh Gaffney ran a PB in the 800 as well as a great performance in the 60m and long jump.

In the under 20 category Scott Brindley and Phoebe Lewis competed, although both are under 17.

Scott again impressed in the pole vault with a vault of 3.11 only 4cm below his PB. Phoebe jumped 4.43, only 13cm short of her personal best.

Sunday the 12th saw the under 15s compete in an equally impressive field including the best young athletes from all over the UK and Ireland.

Ben Burns, Jilly Lefebvre and Scott Brindley represented the NAAC under-15s with Aidan’s big brother Scott again pitting his wits against the under-20s.

Ben achieved two personal best times with 12.37 in the 60m hurdles and 2.38:54 in the 800m. The hurdles are a new event for Ben this season and as a first year under 15 it looks like a promising season for him.

Jilly Lefebvre competed in the 60m hurdles, achieving a PB of 10.62, however she really shone in the high jump, taking bronze with a personal best of 1m 52cm.

Again, a first year under 15 so all in all a fantastic day for the multi eventer.

Aidan Brindley, also in his first year at under 15, was close to his PB in long jump with an effort measuring 5m 01cm - just 7cm short of his best. Aidan jumped 1m 37cm in the high jump but saved his best for the pole vault where he cleared 2m 52. Although short of his PB it was enough to secure the bronze medal.

Elder brother Scott took part in the high jump with a fantastic effort of 1m 72 which is only 1cm short of his PB.

All in all another fantastic day for the NAAC athletes with two national medals and some fantastic performances.

Next up for the club is the third match in the Scottish Athletics Indoor League and these performances are sure to inspire the team to more glory.
