THE final of the second cup competition of the season, the Under-13 Ayrshire Youth Football Association Brian Davies Cup, was held at Kilwinning Sports Club on May 13.

And host club the Wee Buffs - Kilwinning Rangers 2005s - taking on Galston BC.

The young Buffs team had already been crowned League Cup Winners and Galston were the only side to beat them domestically this season.

Galston looked the stronger team in the first half with a couple of gilt-edged chances falling to their frontline, but being narrowly missed.

The teams went in locked at 0-0 at the interval. News then filtered through of a shock scoreline in the league, with word reaching the Wee Buffs that Glenburn were beating their closest challengers, Crosshouse in the league.

This spurred on the Buffs who took control of the early stages of the second half. The opening goal came in 53 minutes. Superb link-up play between Stewart McAlpine and Buffs skipper Jack McMahon saw McMahon reach the bye-line, crossing low and hard and super sub Preston Raeside was on hand to finish high into the net. It wasn’t long before the Buffs took a 2-0 lead. Stewart McAlpine was upended in the penalty box by the oncoming Galston goalie and penalty king, Scott Allison stepped up to score his 13th spot-kick out of 13.

Galston pulled a goal back with four minute left, but the Buffs held on to win their second trophy of the season.
