BEITH exited the Gilbert Baird Cup on the last day in February when they suffered their first defeat of the year, following a poor display against GSC Thistle at the Beith Astroturf.

Recent performances have been characterised by Beith’s inability to kill teams off when they are in the ascendency and this one was no exception as the visitors came from a goal behind to snatch a 2-1 victory in the last minute of the game.

Being the home team, Beith started on the front foot and created the best of the chances so it was no real surprise when they took the lead after 10 minutes when Robbie fired home from what seemed like an impossible angle, after being put through by Lee. Unfortunately, any thoughts that this goal would be the first of many were ill advised as chances came and went and the half ended without any further scoring.

Half-time: Beith Juniors 1– GSC Thistle 0 As others have done before them, GSC were heartened by Beith’s inability to capitalise when in the ascendancy and they came more into the game in the 2nd half, with big Cammy in the Beith goal seeing more of the action immediately in front of him.

With 15 minutes left, GSC got the goal their efforts probably deserved when a goalmouth scramble, and a fortuitous ricochet, left the GSC forward perfectly placed to slot home from close range to place the tie back in the melting pot. Both teams went on to have chances in the closing stages but both seemed content to settle for penalty kicks when the unthinkable happened and Beith conceded again, this time from a corner kick, with almost the last kick of the ball and with no time to stage a fightback Full-time: Beith Juniors 1 – GSC Thistle Beith squad: Cammy King; Jake Jacobson, Scott Brown, Ross McKenzie, Matthew Sloan, Lewis Steele, Blane McLaughlin, Jack Craig, Graeme Crawford, Ryan Brown, Lee Salisbury, Robbie Wilson, Callum Ferguson, Jamie Campbell and Jamie Hogg.FOOTBALL Beith Juniors 2000’s BEITH exited the Gilbert Baird Cup on the last day in February when they suffered their first defeat of the year, following a poor display against GSC Thistle at the Beith Astroturf.
