Scottish Junior Cup Fifth Round

BEITH JUNIORS 3

PETERSHILL 1

SPIRITED Beith finally overcame a Peasy side they have found difficult to beat in recent seasons to soar into the quarter-finals of the showpiece event.

Now they can look forward to a quarter-final showdown in then national competition.

The home side started confidently and Nicky Docherty missed a great opportunity after only a few minutes when a corner fell to him but he took the chance on his right foot and volleyed over. Beith kept up the pressure down the slope, pegging the visitors back and won several corners but the Peasie's goal remained intact with John Sheridan heading over and a Kenny McLean shot bringing out a good save from keeper StevenMcNeil.

As is often the way of these things Beith were caught out in the Glasgow side's first real attack in 20 minutes. The hosts were ruthlessly punished when a cross swung in from the right wing found Jordan Kennedy charging forward and he made no mistake with a virtually free header. Things could have got even worse for Beith a few minutes later when home goalie Stephen Grindlay made a hash of clearing a back pass and dumped the ball straight into Michael Daly's path but the big striker equally made a hash of the great chance and blasted his shot wide.

Beith re-grouped and stuck to the task in hand and Chris Ketterer rightly received a yellow card when he chopped down Tommy Martin as the midfielder drove forward. The hosts rightly got back on level terms eight minutes from half-time when Darren Christie beat his marker and delivered into the box where Paul Frize pounced and created enough room to find the net with a diagonal shot to the far corner.

The same combination did the trick again for Beith five minutes after the restart when Darren Christie's shot could only be parried by McNeil and Paul Frize followed up promptly to smash the lose ball home.

In an open game more goals looked a distinct possibility at either end but the visitors cause received a real setback when Ciaran McElroy was dismissed following a clash with Andy Reid when he first threw the ball the striker then pushed referee Duncan Williams in frustration.

The home side made changes as they tried to see out the tie and sub David McGowan gave them some breathing space after being sent through up the right he cut inside a defender to create enough space and curl a great left foot shot past the keeper into the far corner.

Beith were dominant now and a few more decent chances were created and squandered.

Unlike on so many previous occasions it was not to be Peasy's day and substitute Connor Lynas, somewhat harshly joined his team mate for an early shower six minutes from the end for a mis-timed challenge which caught Nicky Docherty.
