PLAIN-speaking Saltcoats Victoria boss Derek Frye is urging his side to improve after turning in an "abysmal" performance.

The Seasiders went down 2-1 at home to Annbank United in a District League clash at Campbell Park.

Home player Adam Easdon was sent off for a handball just after the break with Bankies netting the resultant penalty-kick and scoring late on to seal victory.

Frye said: "That was one of the poorest games I have seen in Junior football for 20 or 30 years. We were abysmal and created very few chances. I couldn't argue with the sending off. But Annbank didn't play well either and it's a shame for the fans who had to pay to watch the game,"

The manager is demanding a better effort on Saturday as Vics host promotion-chasing Girvan.

He said: "If we play anything like we did at the weekend we will have no chance and it could be embarrassing. Hopefully we can do better."

Meanwhile Ardrossan Winton Rovers manager Chris Strain Snr this week hit out after his side's scheduled Super League First Division game away to Cumbernauld United was called off only an hour before kick-off. Players and officials had already travelled to the ground.

Strain said: "It was a wasted journey. The pitch was waterlogged when we got there and is started snowing. I don't why Cumbernauld didn't call an inspection in the morning if there was any doubt about the game. It's so frustrating as we have only played two games in seven weeks and we are training during the week but have no game on a Saturday. We still have 18 league games to play."

Winton are are Shotts on Saturday and Strain said: "There's some snow there now but hopefully it clears later in the week as we are desperate to play,"
