JUBILANT Ardrossan Winton Rovers boss Sandy MacLean says his team are on course for promotion following a hard-fought 4-0 victory.

District League leaders Winton swept aside Craigmark Burntonians 4-0 at Station Park - a week after drawing 2-2 with Annbank United in a District League match.

Now they host second-placed Whitletts Victoria who are eight points behind with a game in hand and MacLean says the pressure is on the visitors.

He was heartened with the weekend performance and told Sportscene: "It was a great response from the players and it shows you the high standards we are setting when they were disappointed to draw the game against Annbank. Craigmark are not as good a side as Annbank but we worked hard and got the job done. We played long balls and short balls."

Now the gaffer is relishing the top-of-the-table showdown and said: "Teams have to catch us and the pressure is on Whitletts to win on Saturday if they want to have any chance of winning the league. Darvel and Kello Rovers are in the hunt as well but we are on a good run. The target for us is promotion - that's the be all and the end all."

The manager is encouraged with the progress made by the side in his first full season in charge and said: "If you had told me at the start of the season we would be in this position I would have bitten your hand off considering we started the season with very few players."

Asked what had been the secret of his team's success MacLean said: "We have a mix of youth and experience. Players Ryan Caddis and Darren Miller and the coach Thomas Jamieson work well with the younger players."

Winton this week completed the signing of midfielder/defender Michael Lennox from Saltcoats, with the player being fielded as a trialist in the game at Dalmellington.

MacLean said: "Michael is a talented young player and has just completed a scholarship in the United States and has a great attitude. He is a really good passer and will have learned a lot from playing in the US."

Saltcoats Victoria boss Derek Frye was encouraged with his team's performance despite the 3-2 home defeat against Annbank United.

He said: "I felt we should have take something from the game as there were no failures in the team. We played well against a good side. I brought in Greg Kean, who is just 15 and plays with Tass Thistle Under-17s for the last 23 minutes. He plays in left midfield and did well for us."

Vics on Saturday host Dalry Thistle and Frye said: "Dalry had a narrow win at the weekend but as ever we will be looking for the three points."
