STRIKER Gerry Peline was written into Kilwinning Rangers folklore when he scored the goal which won them the Scottish Junior Cup in 1999.

So when the Scottish Cup last 16 draw threw up a clash between Buffs and Fifers Kelty Hearts, whom they defeated 1=- on that fateful day at Firhill 18 years ago it brought back some great memories.

And the now 50-year-old is considering making his way to New Central Park next Saturday, February 18, for the eagerly anticipated showdown, hoping Buffs can prevail again.

He scored 28 goals in a glittering season which saw Buffs win a double-treble, or six-trophy sweep of the Scottish Cup, West of Scotland Cup, Ayrshire League, Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald Cup, Irvine Times Cup and Jackie Scarlett Cup.

Peline said: "The draw is certainly a talking point since we played Kelty in the cup final. It will be a tough tie and I know survival in the Premier Division is the priority for Buffs but hopefully we can get through and go all the way to the final."

Looking back the legendary player, who was with Buffs for 11 years after being signed from Kilbirnie Ladeside, said the 1999 season had been a career highlight.

"Winning the Scottish Cup is the Holy Grail and to win as many other honours that season was great. I gave my all to the club and supporters."

But what was the secret of their success?

"We were a team of winners that was the key. Jim McSherry laid the foundations of the team and when Bobby Dickson came into the squad he added to it. There was a great team spirit. I think I will watch Kilwinning in the West of Scotland Cup at Benburb on Saturday and will then go to Kelty. I look forward to the game. Even if we could take Kelty back to Abbey Park I would fancy our chances of winning the replay. I go along and watch some games but I don't think it was the same as back then."
