WHITLETTS VICTORIA 6

by Matt Speirs

NEW-look Saltcoats were never any match for promotion chasing Whitletts, but an outstanding display by goalkeeper Sean Kirkland kept the score within reason.

The visiting side's first chance came in two minutes when Paul Cameron's shot was well saved by the home goalie.

Five minutes later a double save by Kirkland denied first Craig Harvey and then Darren Baird.

Tony Balfour had a chance for Whitletts in 10 minutes, but he shot wildly over the bar. Blair Anderson was next to have a go in 14 minutes, but again Kirkland saved his effort.

Whitletts finally took the lead in 17 minutes when Craig Harvey picked up a pass from Chris Black and slipped the ball into the net. The second goal came eight minutes later when Harvey shot low past Kirkland.

In 29 minutes Craig Harvey set up Chris Black and the midfielder netted.

With Whitletts in complete command it was no surprise when Darren Baird coolly netted a fourth goal in 34 minutes.

The home side's only chance came a minute after the interval when Stephen Reid shot wide.

Goal number five came in fifth goal came in 51 minutes when Baird set up Tony Balfour, who rounded the keeper and shot into the net.

The scoring was completed in 71 minutes, Niall Kennedy squaring the ball to Chris Black who gave Kirkland no chance with a fine effort.
