Ayrshire Weekly Press Cup First Round

KELLO ROVERS 0

ARDROSSAN WINTON ROVERS 2

SWEET revenge was gained by Winton for their hammering in the league match at Nithside Park as they progressed to set up a home clash with derby rivals Saltcoats Victoria.

They were without captain Ryan Caddis with Adam Easdon came in for Tam Jamieson at left back while Jordan Cairnie and Harry Donaldson started upfront. Dylan Caddis made his first appearance in goal since returning from Clyde.

The first five minutes were fairly uneventful but Kello were doing the early pressing, the dangerous Greg Miller causing problems without creating any real chances.

Winton’s first real chance opportunity came in 12 minutes when they won a free-kick 25 yards out but Regan Ross hit the wall with his set-piece.

Kello then had a shot from Miller cleared off the line by Andy McGregor in 18 minutes. Winton almost took the lead a minute later when Jordan Cairnie was very unlucky to see his angled shot beat Ryan Dunsmuir in the home goal but the ball hit the base of the far post and rebounded to safety.

Winton deservedly took the lead in 20 minutes when a free-kick was played out to Steven Tan on the right who sent the ball into the goalmouth where Harry Donaldson shot low under Dunsmuir from about 10 yards for his first goal of the season.

Caddis made a comfortable save at his near post from Miller in 25 minutes. Three minutes later a dangerous free-kick went straight through to Liam Fleming 10 yards out at the back post out but he shot over the bar. Four minutes later Miller ran onto a long throw-in and got into the box but his shot was deflected wide.

The visiting goalie then made a good save to push a Declan Hill shot onto the post and out for another corner and in 40 minutes the Winton keeper saved another Hill shot. Rovers came close to another goal on 42 minutes when Dunsmuir punched a Jordan Cairnie corner out only as far as Michael Lennox on the left-hand side of the box and his powerful shot came off the underside of the bar and bounced to safety.

Winton doubled their lead in 50 minutes when Dunsmuir misjudged the flight of the ball from Bobby Colligan’s corner kick and it ended up in the back of the net.

Chances were few and far between for both sides in the second half although Donaldson, Larry McMahon and Cairnie were putting themselves about and unsettling the Kello defence.

With five minutes to go Donaldson did well to keep the ball from a throw in and get along the line before passing to Cairnie but his shot went across the goal.
