DEDICATED fans braved the awful weather to honour long-serving Beith Juniors striker Kenny McLean as his testimonial was staged at Bellsdale Park on Saturday.

And although driving rain and gale force winds forced the abandonment of the game at half-time there was still plenty of entertainment for punters, who had a novel opportunity to see today's squad and the heroes from yesteryear in action at the same time.

McLean picked a team featuring the current squad and the All Stars, who also included some present players. However a cruciate ligament injury meant he was unable to play in the game which marked his 10 years of service at Bellsdale Park.

The first chance fell to Andy Reid of the All Stars who was the recipient of a poor kick out from goalkeeper James Digney and his first-time speculative shot went narrowly wide,.

Soon after this, it was one-way traffic with the All Stars struggling with the pace of the game being applied by the more organised current squad.

In four minutes they were ahead after a fine move by David McKenna and Daz Christie ended with the latter netting a low drive past Keith Ross.

The conditions were playing a big part in proceedings but still both set of players were enjoying it and the carnival atmosphere being created by the supporters.

This was about to change when Beith went 3-0 ahead with a further goals from Christie and Jamie Cunningham after some slack defending.

Playing down the Bellsdale slope and with the high tempo being applied by the Beith Juniors side it was inevitable that the scoreline would soon increase and indeed did with further goals from Cunningham and new signing David McKenna in 30 and 34 minutes making it 5-0.

The All Stars were always under pressure but did manage a couple of decent efforts to keep the Juniors on their toes. In particular Reid was showing he still had some flair to offer and in one move his exceptional body movement took two Beith defenders out of the game to let him in on Digney, only for the goalkeeper to make a good save from his 25-yard shot. Then again Reid latched on to a through ball from John Craig only to see his netbound shot cleared off the line.

The incessant rain was now slowing the ball down on numerous occasions and the conditions were dangerous for all players. In the last two minutes there were further goals from a Conner McClinchey penalty and a tap in by McKenna just on 45 minutes before the game to be stopped.
