Scottish Junior Cup First Round

ARDROSSAN WINTON ROVERS 6

BANCHORY ST TERNAN 2

NEW Winton boss Bryan Slavin was in the dugout on his 40th birthday with coach Mark McCann as the duo took charge for this Scottish Cup tie.

And they presided over a goal-fest with their team in top form.

The opening stages were fairly lively and despite Winton forcing a couple of corners the first chance fell to the visitors with Bryan Tucker saving with his feet from Sam Smith in five minutes.

Rovers’ first chance came a few minutes later when Lee Davidson played a good ball over the defence which Larry McMahon brought under control before turning and shooting but the ball went over the bar. Seamus Croll had an effort deflected for a corner by Andy Irvine in seven minutes as Banchory’s good start continued and a minute later Tucker cleared with his feet from Ryan Findlay.

It was a fairly even opening 20 minutes with the visitors creating the best chances although Winton took the lead in 21 minutes when Bobby Colligan played a good ball into the box where Jamie McKenna flicked it over Buchan who had come off his line from just outside the box and into the net.

Winton were starting to take control and on the half hour the unmarked McKenna headed a McMahon cross straight into Buchan’s arms.

It was 2-0 five minutes later when the ball played on to McKenna by McMahon, who took the ball to the edge of the box before firing past Buchan from about 18 yards for 2-0. Two minutes later a defender’s poor header was brought under control by McMahon who played the ball to Lee Davidson and he slammed an unstoppable angled shot into the roof of the net.

The visitors pulled a goal back in 41 minutes when slack defending left Jamie Biglass unmarked on the right side of the box and he hit a superb first time volley past Bryan Tucker following a low cross from Findlay. Winton however restored their three goal lead just on half-time when the ball was played by Alan Muir to Steven Tan just outside the box and he shot past Buchan from 15 yards.

Banchory had the first chance of the second half when Croll headed wide just before Rovers increased their lead in 47 minutes when a good low cross from the left by Larry McMahon went all the way to the back post where Colligan scored his first goal of the season.

Banchory were still trying to make a game of it and perhaps Winton became slightly complacent. In 52 minutes Biglass hit a 30-yard free-kick wide.

The visitors bagged the next goal however when although it looked as if Devin Kennedy-Colbert had fouled Andy Irvine on the edge of the Rovers' box before the loose ball fell to him and he shot home, giving Tucker no chance from 15 yards.

Tucker came off his line to dive on the ball at the feet of Josh Robertson before he could shoot from just inside the box. In 70 minutes a defender misjudged the bounce of the ball from a Tucker kick out and McMahon ran on to it got into the box and hit a shot which went in off the far post.
