WINTON secured a place in next season's League One following a goalless draw at Burnside Park on Saturday.

Mark McCann's side created the better chances and the first real chance fell to Thomas Donovan in eight minutes when Greg McVeigh played a good ball into the box and the winger twisted and turned before shooting narrowly wide.

On the half hour Winton had a strong claim for a penalty when McVeigh was fouled as he ran in on goal but nothing was given.

The last real action of a poor first half came in the 40th minute when Winton won a free kick for handball about 20 yards out following a good move down the left but Michael Lennox’s free kick was deflected for a corner.

Muirkirk had the first opening of the second half when Michael Lennox, facing his own goal had to clear a dangerous ball into the box over his own bar in 47 minutes. In 51 minutes Winton broke down the park after a Stephen Campbell free-kick was headed out of the Winton box and although the ball into the box was missed by Larry McMahon, it came to Steven Tan, but his shot was blocked then cleared. Winton then won a free-kick 30 yards out in 55 minutes but Lee Davidson’s effort deflected off Thomas Donovan for a goal kick.

Muirkirk then enjoyed a bit of pressure and almost took the lead on the hour when a long throw – in from the right saw a shot cleared off the line before Larry McMahon cleared the ball out for another throw-in. Rovers had the next decent chance in 65 minutes when a good break down the right involving Larry McMahon and Thomas Donovan saw the ball crossed to Tan who turned and shot but the ball went narrowly wide.

In 69 minutes Bryan Tucker made a good save from a Ross Lundie header.

With five minutes left, Larry McMahon cleared a 20 yard Macdonald free-kick off the line. Winton almost snatched the winner in time added on but Nathan Bogle saved Jamie McKenna’s shot with this feet.
