PROUD Beith Juniors assistant boss Stevie Convery praised his team after they secured a vital point at Arthurlie, despite playing almost 20 minutes with 10 men.

But he hit out at the referee for sending off striker Andy Reid following a second booking in 71 minutes.

The Super Premier Division game at Dunterlie Park ended in a 0-0 draw and moved the Bellsdale Park side closer to safety.

They are now in sixth spot on 25 points, nine clear of fhird bottom Shotts and Cumnock.

Convery was encouraged with his team’s display and said: “Dunterlie is a very difficult place to go and it was good to pick up a point. I felt we had played well in the last two games against Hurlford United and Petershill and were unlucky not to take anything from them. We didn’t play as well on Saturday but at least we got the result.

“I was disappointed with the sending off as I felt the two bookings Andy Reid was given were both very soft but we battled well after that.” Beith on Saturday host a struggling Cumnock side, who are being tipped for the drop after drawing 0-0 at home to Kilbirnie Ladeside.

The Beith number two addedL “It’s difficult to tell but hopefully one more win will be enough to make sure we stay up.” Winger Gary McCann is hoping Irvine Meadow’s season can end with a silver lining with their Premier Division title hopes all but gone.

Meadow were held 1-1 at Troon and McCann, who was on target said: “It was disappointing on Saturday. We didn’t create too many chances. It will be difficult to win the league but we will keep plugging away, try and win our last three games and see where that leaves us.” Now Meadow face a daunting trip to Beechwood Park to face Auchinleck Talbot in the opening round of the showpiece Ayrshire Weekly Press Cup and McCann said: “They are a very good side but we have beaten them away twice and are looking to get through. It would be disappointing if we finished two seasons without a trophy and we are also still in the West of Scotland Cup.” For the full story see this week's Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald.
