THE sections were drawn for next season’s National leagues last weekend, with newly-promoted Ayr taking their place in the Premier League.

The Ayr club have been grouped with Bainfield, Falkirk, Abbeyview, East Lothian and Aberdeen in Section ‘B’ and I’m sure the Ayrshire club will be relishing the challenge in a section which looks the better of the two.

Ardrossan, relegated to Division 1 this season, go in with Inverclyde, East Kilbride, Dumbarton, Tweedbank and Auchinleck, where they’ll be hoping to gain a quick return to the Premier League. Prestwick remain anchored in the bottom division, and are grouped with Cumbernauld, Glasgow, Whiteinch, Cowal and Galleon in Section ‘C’.

In the Seniors Leagues, Ayr go up against Galleon, Cumbernauld, Cowal, Inverclyde, East Kilbride and Blantyre in West Section ‘A’, whilst Prestwick go in with Irvine, Coatbridge, Whiteinch, Glasgow and Lanarkshire in Section ‘C’. CHAMPION trainer Paul Nicholls looks like having two runners in this year’s Coral Scottish Grand National at Ayr Racecourse on Saturday, April 18.

Sam Winner and Benvolio will represent the stable providing Nicholls is happy with the ground conditions at the track. Sponsors Coral have priced them at 20/1 and 16/1 respectively.

A total of 93 horses are entered for the race and Coral have Tony Martin’s Gallant Oscar at the head of the betting at 10/1 with the Ian Williams trained Indian Castle and David Pipe’s Broadway Buffalo on 12s while the Willie Mullins trained On His Own, a winner at Cork on Sunday is 20/1. Milborough from the Ian Duncan yard at Coylton has a 16/1 quote while the previously mentioned Hadrian’s Approach is 20/1.

Simon Clare, Coral spokesman said “We are thrilled with the quality and quantity of the entries for The Coral Scottish Grand National. The race is always one of the top five biggest betting turnover races of the year and attracts one of the largest Channel 4 audiences so can rightly be regarded as one of racing’s crown jewels.” The main supporting race on Coral Scottish Grand National Saturday is the £100,000 QTS Scottish Champion Hurdle and the highest rated of the 44 entries is Irving from the Paul Nicholls yard.

Other notables at this stage include Nicky Richards Glingerburn winner of all four of his hurdle races, including a Class 1 at Kelso last time out, Evan Williams’s 2012 winner of the race Court Minstrel, Sign Of A Victory from the Nicky Henderson stable and John Ferguson’s Sea Lord.

The standard of horse running in the race, which is now in the top five richest handicap hurdles run in Britain, looks like being the highest ever with Irving rated 157 and 23 horses rate 140 or higher.

David Brown, Managing Director of Ayr Racecourse, said: “The quality of entries for the Coral Scottish Grand National and QTS Scottish Champion Hurdle is exceptional.

“To see horses from most of the leading trainers including Paul Nicholls, Nicky Henderson, Jonjo O’Neill, Alan King and of course Willie Mullins entered is extremely satisfying.

“The Scottish Grand National has attracted some leading Irish entries and as it’s a race that they have never won it adds to the intrigue.” CLARK Drive Girls U15s on Saturday took on Hamilton Accies in an entertaining game at Marress.

They were down 3-0 after 15 minutes but responded brilliantly, pulling a goal back with Laura Gordon helping Kari Stewart knock the ball home.

Drive totally dominated the first 20 minutes of the second half but failed to score and Hamilton hit them with two goals on the counter-attack.

The girls kept plugging away and Stewart scored again, But Accies scored four more, including two penalties.

Melanie Jones had some great stops in goals, Holly McConnell had a great game at full-back and Megan Armstrong and Amy Cox are starting to create a good partnership at the back.

Isla Burns is starting to show her ability in midfield and Caitlin McMillan, who can still play U13s has natural skill and movement and shows plenty of promise for the season ahead.

Captain Devon Cunningham was excellent in patches while Kart tormented the Hamilton back four. Erin Kerr had a couple of good runs and passes. Also a special mention goes to Nicola Fisher who had a excellent game wide left. She also plays for the U17s and her experience certainly helps the young team.

Jemma Bruce from the 13s deserves mention as she came on and showed why she can step up. Lisa Lennox also helped with the coaching and her support is appreciated. The game was also handled well by referee Craig McDonald.

The girls can take a lot of credit for never letting their heads go down and continuing to play an attacking game.

Clark Drive Girls would like to welcome former player Lisa Lennox to their coaching staff. She will mainly be working with the U15s alongside Ashleigh and Sophie Taggart.
